AUTUMN IN THE PYRENEES: Siran to Carcassonne

It's a pleasant day, although a little chilly early on.  It seems like we had more downhill than uphill today.  But wait, I can check that with my computer.  -- No, we climbed 1,050 feet and only descended 1,000!

At km 13 we descended into the village of Caunes-Minervois because we were told there was much sculpture in the town.  We only saw one thing which might be considered sculpture and it was pretty ugly.  We were also told the quarries near here produced marble for the Vatican but we saw no evidence of that either.  We did see sculpture in Carcassonne at the entry to the Medieval town. See below.

Again we were cycling in the vineyards.  Yesterday we saw an automated picking operation and we rode by wineries where the smell of the crush was more than evident.

We stopped for coffee and half a hamburger each at Trebes.  In the photo below we are next to the canal and boats leave every few minutes. So there are restaurants all along the canal.

One alternative is to cycle into Carcassonne on the canal path, but we had enough of that unpaved road the other day.  We choose the highway and it brings us directly to our hotel, a few meters from the Medieval City (La Cite Medievale).  We're here for two days; no group dinner tonight but we have reservations at a restaurant recommended by Trip Advisor in La Cite.
